Roguelike games are a very specific subgenre of RPG video games, designed by the hardcore fans for the hardcore fans. This type of games is characterized by a dungeon crawl through randomly generated levels, tile-based graphics, turn-based gameplay, and (most importantly) by the permanent death of the main character. Most roguelike video games are based on a high fantasy narrative, as they are heavily influenced by classic RPGs like Dungeons & Dragons. The 1980 game Rogue is widely considered as the forerunner, the namesake of the genre, and the best of all time. It’s worth noting that roguelike games were popularized among the college students and computer programmers in the 1980s and 1990s. This resulted in a large number of variants but still sticking to aforementioned gameplay elements. Top modern roguelikes are The Binding of Isaac, FTL: Faster Than Light, and Rogue Legacy and Spelunky. Games Republic. Only the best roguelike games for every hardcore PC gamer.
